"KING
OF THE FLEET"

is known Navy-wide as "KING OF THE FLEET". This is
evidenced by the many awards she has earned. In the Pacific
she earned the Combat Action Ribbon, the National
Defense Service Medal, the Armed Forces Expeditionary
Medal (Korea), the Vietnam
Service Medal with one silver and one bronze star, the Republic
of Vietnam Medal, and the Meritorious Unit Commendation. Upon
her recommissioning and for her subsequent service in the Atlantic
Fleet she earned a Meritorious Unit Commendtion, The Navy
Unit Commendation, the Armed Forces Expeditionary
Medal, and the
Coast Guard Meritorious Unit Commendation. KING made a clean
sweep of all Battle Efficiency Awards, a feat accomplished
by only three other Surface Force ships Navywide. The ship
went nine for nine in departmental awards and also won the
Battle Efficiency "E" for missile shooters in Destroyer
Squadron TWO. KING has received the Chief of Naval Operations "Surface
Ship Safety Award", the coveted MARJORIE
STERRETT BATTLESHIP FUND AWARD as the top Cruiser/ Destroyer/ Frigate in the Atlantic
Fleet, and for her sustained outstanding performance at sea
and ashore, KING was awarded the first ever "TOP
HAND" Award
from Commander, Sixth Fleet, as the outstanding deployed unit. |
