How to use the Timeline page

The USS King Timeline page is a complex Database interface that allows you to View all of the events in the history of the ship. There is a huge amount of Data in this Database, so it may take a little time to load.

The Data is displayed in 3 formats.

Map View

The Map View shows the location of all of the events that have occurred in the history of the King.

While your mouse pointer is over the Map, you'll see a hand icon () or a pointer icon ().

The hand icon allows you to move the Map. By pressing and holding your left mouse button, you can "grab" and move the Map in any direction. Zoom controls are located in the upper left corner to allow you to zoom in on a specific area.

Events are indicated by small colored bubbles on the Map. When the mouse pointer is over one of these bubbles, it changes to a pointer icon. Clicking on the bubble will bring up a window with the event details. Some Event Detail windows have links within them to cruise books or other information about that event.

Timeline View

The Timeline View shows when all of the events occurred in the history of the King.

While your mouse pointer is over the Timeline, you'll see a move icon () or a pointer icon ().

The move icon allows you to move the Timeline. The Timeline band is divided into 2 sections. By pressing and holding your left mouse button, you can "grab" and move the Timeline left or right. Dragging the icon in the upper (light gray) section moves slowly through time around events. Dragging the icon in the lower (dark gray) section allows you to quickly move through the years.

Events are indicated by small colored bands or dots on the Timeline. When the mouse pointer is over one of these bands, it changes to a pointer icon. Clicking on the band will bring up a window with the event details. Some Event Detail windows have links within them to cruise books or other information about that event.

Data View

The Data View shows all of the events (with details) that have occurred in a Table format.

To the right of the Table View are the search filters

This is where the real power of this interface lies. The filters are divided into several categories allowing you to View only specific events. For example, if you click on "1961 Shakedown Cruise", the Map, Timeline, and Data Views will present only events that occured on that cruise. Filter categories include event types, cruises, ports visited, year, date, and DLG or DDG events.

It is even possible to filter by several events. For example, if I wanted to see the events that occured while I was aboard (1986 to 1990), I would first select "1986" in the Year box. After that, I would check the box next to the other years that I was aboard.
