I had a great time at the reunion, and am looking forward to
the 2003 reunion in Norfolk. Since our reunion a week ago, I
have made contact with Jake Weilenga and Frenchy Ligtermoet.
I may have just made contact with John Terrel, too. My goal,
now, is to contact all from the WA Division during the King's
life.
Thanks, Jonathan Kammen, Terry Forsyth, and Board for putting
on a very successful first reunion event.

My thanks to the reunion committee for putting it all together.

The King was my second ship, I had an opportunity to meet some
really good people and make some life long friends, like Rick
Billichek, John D. Rose, Jim Hoover and Bob Dawson, to name
only a few. I was R Div LPO, and I survived the freak accident
that killed my good friend and two other shipmates.

Hello shipmates, the USS King was my second ship and I made
some life long friends on it, especially, HT2 Rick Bilicheck,
HT3 John D. Rose, EM2 Jim Hoover and HT3 Bob Dawson. I was R
Div LPO and the only High Pressure Pipe welder fom 75-79. I
had an opportunity to work throughout the ship and meet a lot
interesting people. The accident during the winter of 79 changed
my life forever. Myself and BM3 Irby were on the main deck with
several R div and 1st Lt personnel on the morning of the accident.
We were cleaning up after a night of storms which had tore up
the main deck. Myself and Irby were facing aft when the first
wave hit us. We were knocked off our feet due to the speed of
the water. After the water receded a little, we tried to work
our way to the hatch, at the same time we were yelling at our
crews to get back inside. The second wave was bigger and I did
not even see it. Myself and Irby's lives were saved because
we got hung up on the acommodation ladder that was welded on
the side of the ship. Myself and Irby were hurt pretty bad.
I was cut and broke up all over, and Irby's shoulder was torn
out of the socket. Myself and Irby had to be heloed off the
ship, and I remember when they were trying to get Irby onto
the helicopter, he almost got washed over the side again. I
was strapped in a stokes strecher and I remember telling the
guys not to drop me. I lost a good friend and two shipmates
that day. I will always remember the time I served on the USS
King DDG-41.

business with a St. Thomas cop that he took for a hooker.

Dave Cass (6/14/2002)
Email: davecass@cox.net
Your Rank: Ensign
Years Served: 1988-1990
Disbursing and Sales Officer.
My memories include port calls to Amsterdam, GTMO, St Thomas,
St Thomas, St Thomas, oh, and St Thomas.
Walking on the walls during a rough
passage through the English Channel and having to wedge myself
between the repeater and
the bulkhead to stay standing during bridge watch watching
the roll indicator with wide eyes.
Being pulled from the bridge into the
CO's at-sea cabin for a heart-to-heart chat with CDR Moreland
when he didn't like
my interpretation of disbursing regulations (a "conversation" that
the entire bridge watch heard).
Freezing cold quarterdeck watches -- huddling around the little
space heater.
Coming up $400 short after a payday and how much that $400
hurt on Ensign's pay -- never did find out who the lucky winner
was on that one.
Being the "target" for the
security drill on every single duty day. I can't count the
number of times I was decapitated
or stuffed in a locker.
Looking down at the repeater in horror
during one midwatch when I had the con and seeing that the
BM was attempting to
go "around the world" and mumbling every obscenity
I knew into his ear quietly enough that the OOD didn't hear
until we were back on course.
Standing watch on the fantail pulling into port from a family
cruise and watching the fantail swing closer and closer to a
moored submarine. Then, finding out that our screw had lobbed
off their towed sonar. Also remember the cavitations that shook
the ship on the next cruise because of our mis-shaped screw.
The first underway after the Navy changed
the "garbage
at sea" regulations and that absolutely nasty light trap
on the starboard side that we used as a dumpster. That smell
still haunts me.
Being in that damn third-story bunk
in the stateroom. At least it was high enough that the XO
couldnt see that it was
never made.

Attended precommissioning NTDS school at NEL San Diego. Went
aboard in Bremerton as prospective CIC Officer. Mel Bustard
was the commissioning CO, and a better Commanding Officer never
existed, in my eyes. I read a reference to the King steaming
backwards at high speed. I remember the incident. We overtook
a freightor and passed it going astern. Also remember the shakedown
cruise down to the equator to get our Shellback credentials.
Would like to hear from anyone in the commissioning crew. I
try to keep in touch with Rich Crockett and have talked to Tizzy
Tisdale. Without a doubt, my three years on the King were the
best of 23 I served.

Can't begin to tell the story of the Warship from Hell. Best
signal bridge on the east coast. Anyone beg to differ, they
are full of.....Sigs Whitney, Anthis, Young and SMC Setford,
together we were untouchable. I may have been in OPS, but experianced
great friendships with shipmates from WEPS, ENG, Supply, Officers.
You are talking an extremely tight bunch of guys. OSs kind of
had prioities screwed up, but there were some great guys mixed
back in the 'squirrels nest'.The snipes kept that ship running
when all others were broke. Frump, Bruiser, Chief V, I'd go
to war with you guys anytime. the Deck Apes knew how to 'turn
to' like no others. Some great officers LTs Moran, Ketch...,
Dyson, Fries, LCDR Dalrymple, WEPS. Too many guys to name. If
you were onboard with me, you know who you are. Drop me a line.
GTMO, 2 NATO, Drug Ops, North Atlantics, the Carribean...We
steamed it all and were always prepared for more...

When I think about the days of my youth, I have fond memories
of the King and of all the men I served with. Oh, to bring
back
those days when the salt air filled my lungs, the 1 MC was
blaring " Battle Stations- Battle Stations" now all hands
man your "Battle Stations". and Fire Control would
call over the sound powered phones MT 31 "Surface Action
Starboard" and those 3" guns would belch fire and
smoke and the smell would would make you swell with pride.

My years on the USS King were some of the best years of my life.
It was both interesting and challenging to test the new NTDS
computer system, especially from my vantage point as CIC Officer.
During my stint we crossed the equator and also spent time in
Hawaii, Japan, Hong Kong, Guam and the Phillipines. We steamed
off the coast of New Zealand during the Cuban Missile crisis.
Some of my most cherished memories are the times the officers
competed against the crew in softball and basketball.

Served as Gunnery Officer during REFTRA and one WestPac cruise
under Captain Demster Jackson, the greatest skipper ever. My
strongest (maybe not so great) memory was almost sinking a tuna
boat with the 5-inch 54 off San Clemente island during REFTRA.
I had help from LTJG Reeber, Ensign Otterbein, and a chief,
but LT Killinger chewed my butt the hardest. We flunked the
exercise.

As you may or may not remember, the day that I reported to the
King, was the day of the infamous After Boiler Room fuel line
fire. I cannot remember the exact date, but I believe it was
late autumn, like November or early December, 1968. We were
awakened early on that morning in Subic Bay, to
catch a mail plane flying to the USS Ticonderoga, operating
with the US Sixth Fleet, in the Tonkin Gulf. I and another fireman,
and two E-4's were confined to the Ticonderoga's secondary con.
Now, this day the SecNav was inspecting the Sixth Fleet. And,
all of the airplanes on board were being rotated and re-stored.
The Ticonderoga was awaiting the arrival of SecNav and did not
want to be caught unprepared. But, as SecNav's flight was delayed,
the Ops Officer of the Ticonderoga decided to sent us four,
by Big Momma Helo, to the King.
Now, from the air, my first impressions of the King were as
of observing a finely polished gem. And, after we had landed
on the King's fantail, we observed that every square inch had
been either freshly painted or polished. When we landed, however,
the Captain, the XO, and all other senior officers were on the
fantail in executive tropical formal dress, including scaberds
and swords. They saluted us as we arrived, but we could sense
the frustration in their demeanor. (In other words: Get your
ass out of here!)
After SecNav left the Captain applauded
the crew via the ship's public address system (IC gear) and
said that SecNav had said "Please tell me where I can put my hands, as I do not want
to get grey paint on my white gloves." and "She sure
is pretty, but can she fight?" Then, the Captain pronounced
Holiday routine, (it was, already, 5:30 PM). After, begging
my compadres to let me eat before the chow line closed, and
trying to catch some sleep (I had been traveling for two weeks
from the East Coast, and had little to eat), at 9 PM, GQ went
off and here we go.
Now, to answer your question, this film crew would have been
on the King in 79-81, is my guess. We were told to keep out
of the way and/or to be of as much assistance as possible.
