What a great group to serve with, where
are Duffy, Casey, Diehnel, Mishler, Edler and the rest of the ETs?
You had better make
it to the reunion!!
I will never forget "General Quarters, General Quarters, this is NOT a drill!" And
Mr. Eddy commencing firing the 5 inch while I was on the Foremast. I thought
I was going to have to learn how to fly!!! I retired from San Diego Police Department,
due to being shot twice while I was a Robbery Detective, but can NOT complain.

left some strange memeries and even stranger scars! My scap book is full

My favorite story is when, our IC gang
leader, IC2 Charles Bakey, instructed a fellow member of our crew to
replace the captain's
(Cmdr. Dempster Jackson) telephone located in his commode, inside his
cabin. My fellow sailor, with new telephone in hand, knocked on the captain's
cabin door. As he did not hear any reply, he proceeded to enter the cabin,
opened the door to the can, and hit the captain in the knees. The next
day, the "P.O.D." carried the instructions for proper entry |

team going undefeated in the Med... Mannnn too many stories. Was on Mess

I remember it all; the killer fire, the USS Evans, the war,
the fear, the trip to North Korea, the beauty of the ocean, the work
(some hard - some not so hard), standing watch, liberties, having to
leave my wife for an entire year, the unique characters, the heroism,
the dear friends, and some folks I'd rather forget. I was a very young
man and I still think of it often. I imagine we all have that in common,
too. |

What an adventure for an 18 year old kid straight out of
the deep Oregon Woods! There were so many good times, good people and
exciting places. Sad times too with the fire and the loss of four shipmates,
two of whom were good friends. Everyone I knew had a shorttimers calendar
and could hardly wait to get out of the Navy. Now, looking back,it was
quite the adventure that I would not have missed for anything. The King
was a fine ship! |

Hey, cool, there's a lot of folks starting
to sign on here. And, hey, now there's a funny memory. I remember when "the Dominican
ET" nailed the old man by opening the hatch while he was jogging on the
01 level. Later on when he was on watch back at the missile house, we
asked him what happened? He said, he opened the door, heard a "thud",
looked around and then down and saw Pacek lieing flat on his back and
out of it. . . so, he went back inside and closed the door!! |

One story does come to mind. When our
division (OC) first moved aboard after pre-commissioning school, our
sleeping compartment
was located in the bow. The first night out to sea there was a loud rolling
and banging going on in the compartment below us. Upon investigation
the next day, we discovered that one of the 5"-54 shells had come loose
and was rolling around with the movement of the ship. Our compartment
was located between the 5" mount above us and the magazine below us.

Worst time at sea was a 3 week excercise in the North Atlantic/Actic
Sea in the early spring, forget the year. We were confined inside the
skin of the ship nearly the entire time. Made for short tempers and sea
sick boot camps. Also remember an unfortunate night in Lisbon Portugal
in which I ended up incarcerated for the evening. |

time on the "King"! I had good and bad experiences as we all did. Looking
back, it is still one of the greatest periods of my life. I got to see

When getting underway after christmas stand down, all of
the ancillary electronics went shut down in combat and on the bridge.
Engineers were doing PMS on the forward emergency generator and the automatic
buss transfer (ABT) power switch in UHF was over ridden. ET2 Potowski
was at sea and anchor detail in there and quickly corrected the problem.
Crisis over, I went up to the bridge and told Captain Clark what had
happened and that I thought I was at fault for not checking the power
source prior |
