Nice site! Had
a great time on "King Of The Fleet". She was one steaming beauty.
Seems we were always taking underway commitments for the other
ships of the class who couldn't put to sea. Would be interested
in hearing from other crewmembers with whom I served. |

I'm surprised(and glad) to see that there is someone who's taken the time and effort to develope a homepage for the 'KING'. After 4 1/2 years, 3 major cruises, it's great to see some names who of great company that I shared on those late nights on watch. I've got a ton of pictures, and we'll be in touch. |

I served on a
sister ship, USS LUCE (DDG-38) and steamed several times with
the KING in the Caribbean Sea. I have some pics of her steaming
in formation with us and the COONTZ during ops. I loved the
Coontz Class ships and will always remember those months and
years underway. I've seen the sites for the PREBLE & KING, and
wish there was also one for the LUCE. Perhaps one day there
will be. GO NAVY! |

I served aboard KING from June 1966 until the spring of 1970. I loved this ship and everything we did. If anyone would be interested in discussing our experiences please drop me a line. I am in the process of creating some written memories for my kids and this was a very important time in my life. Thanks for creating this site.

I'm glad to see the site has finally been created. I was only on the King for a little over 1 year, but, I saw more action because of the fire than the 3 years onboard the DeHaven. I spent my entire enlistment serving in the Viet Nam area. After 3 years on the DeHaven, I was transferred to the King a month before we left San Diego, back to Nam. Clif. |

Yea I was a skive waver, it beat actually working through my time in the service. Was onboard King for my entire tour in the Navy. Two NATO's a few blue noses, and to many Caribbean runs to count. Love the site, I sent in some pictures of the old girl during her last few years, I hope a couple of them make it to the gallery. I'd love to here from any old shipmates. |

I served on her
from Feb 73 until decommissioning for conversion to a DDG. Took
her through the Panama Canal where we manned the rail in whites
all the way through because "the eyes of the world were watching us" This
was because we went through the canal at the same time as a
British ship that had Prince Charles aboard. They were in shorts
and we were in whites. We were originally supposed to take her
to Portsmouth for decommissioning but politics got involved
and they turned us around and sent us to some God forsaken shipyard
in New Orleans. The place was so small they had to rent a crane
to off load our gear. Heard later on that they screwed it up
so bad that they ended up towing the ship out of there to finish
the conversion elsewhere. Captain Anderson was the last CO.
He was a hell of a good guy. I only spent ten months aboard
her but it was a great ten months. Great ship, great crew. |

I was aboard King in Mississippi!!!
Then in Portsmouth VA. Made two NATO
cruises. She was a great ship, and I made a lot of friends. Hope to hear from some of my other shipmates who were aboard her in Mississippi? |

I never served on the King.I served in the Mahan, which your ship relieved mine in the spring of 1986 in the Med.I was a BT and later on went and struck Boatswain's Mate and served my remaining time in that rating. Those were good ships despite their foibles and assorted headaches.
Mahan is pictured moored portside to King in the Gallery. |
